Gambia Plastic Recycling Gambian Street Kids
Green-Ocean e.V. 94469 Deggendorf
2021 Project Description
1. Project Goals
The basic idea behind the campaign is, first and foremost, to offer help and support to street children and disadvantaged young people living in poverty.
Distributing clothing and shoes is only a short-term solution, serving merely as a means to establish contact and build trust. The long-term goals, however, are to ensure stability and a basic income through the plastic recycling project. The aim is to create a foundation upon which further aid projects can be organized and provided. The project, within its specific framework, is designed to support the participants' independence and thus counteract any long-term dependence on charity and financial assistance.
2. If you would like to help, please:
a) Collect clothing, shoes and, if possible, mobile phones that you could donate to this project.
b) Please ensure that all items are clean, usable, and functional. Please do not send rubbish.
c) Please pack everything in a suitable box. d) Please print and complete the enclosed shipping label — at the end of the project description.
e) Due to customs and import regulations, it is unfortunately necessary to use the specified sender address. However, you are welcome to include a letter with your return address in the package.
f) Please send us a photo of the package contents and a list of the donated items—simply as a photo via email to vorstand@helping-hands-goev.org or WhatsApp. We ask for your understanding, but we would like to notify the authorities in Gambia of the package's arrival.
g) Please send the package to our local coordinator in Gambia, Alhagie Jallow.
h) If you would like to make a financial contribution to this campaign, please donate to our GoFundMe account — we promise to use 95% of the donations received directly for the project — unfortunately, we also have bank fees. https://gofund.me/95ea1f96
i) We thank you very much for your participation and support of this project. Please tell all your friends and acquaintances about this project — perhaps they too will decide to support the street children project in Gambia.
3. Brief description:
The plan is to combat the obvious poverty of street children by sending clothing donations to Gambia for local distribution. Our local team will distribute the clothing directly on the streets. At the same time, contact and a sustainable relationship will be established with the street children. Another goal is to invite these young people to participate in the plastic recycling project and collect plastic waste in public spaces, along riverbanks, and on beaches. The waste plastic will be weighed, purchased, and transported by our local team. Transport will primarily be carried out using environmentally friendly, local donkey carts. Storage and sorting will take place at the Alhagie Jallow site. The material will be sorted according to its composition, cleaned, and packed into containers. It will then be shipped to our buyer by sea freight.
4. Project Structure:
a) Collecting clothing and shoes: Using the website and Facebook presence of our NGO
We would like to inform our members and readers about this activity. Interested individuals will receive a shipping label via email or WhatsApp for self-printing. It is important that the designated sender, Robert Adolf (to avoid customs duties), the recipient's name, and our NGO's logo are clearly visible on the package. We expect each participant to send their package(s) directly to Gambia. This saves time, reduces costs, and ensures that your donation reaches the intended recipient! We also currently lack suitable storage facilities to temporarily hold the donations.
b) Handing over the donations in Gambia:
Immediately upon arrival, as soon as possible, the donations will be distributed locally in Gambia.
directly on the street, addressing the young people.
c) Collecting waste plastic:
With this activity, we aim to secure a small income for the young people. Local youth benefit, and we help prevent gang formation. The plastic collection is accompanied by a donkey cart. The plastic is weighed and paid for—currently 5 Dalasis per kilogram of waste plastic.
d) Sale of the plastic to interested parties for the purpose of recycling:
Alhagie and Robert are currently in contact with several interested companies from India, Serbia, and China. The goal is to establish contact and reach an agreement.
The plastic material must be transported from Farato (storage area) to Banjul port.
The prospective buyer must provide a clear description of the desired plastic.
The buyer is to provide a container and have it transported from the port of Banjul to the storage site in Farato.
Shipping costs for containers to and from Gambia are to be borne by the buyer of the waste plastic.
5. Project Area:
The pilot project is planned for Farato, Busumbala, and Brikama. The aim is, of course, to expand the project to other areas of Gambia. Neighboring Senegal could also be included.
